After the release of this song, a 15-year-old girl named Elisa Greubel emailed MC Lars, mentioning a lawsuit against her family by the RIAA. She had downloaded about 600 songs illegally. Nettwerk and their client MC Lars became involved with the lawsuit. They stood by the family, and Nettwork’s CEO, Terry McBride, issued a statement:
“Suing music fans is not the solution, it’s the problem. . . Litigation is a deterrent to creativity and passion and it is hurting the business I love. The current actions of the RIAA are not in my artists’ best interests.”
Nettwerk and Lars agreed to pay any fees and court costs associated with the case on behalf of the family, as well as offer their lawyer to defend them. The lawyer, Charles Lee Mudd Jr., had defended many cases against the RIAA previously.
